The NJ FID card, explained
Everything New Jersey residents ask about the Firearms Purchaser Identification Card: what it covers, how to apply, what to do when you move, and how to stop carrying your credential as a folded printout.
What the NJ FID card is
The New Jersey Firearms Purchaser Identification Card — the FID card — is the state credential residents need to buy or receive rifles and shotguns, and to buy ammunition for them. It is issued by the police department covering the town where you live, or by the New Jersey State Police if your town has no local department.
It is not a carry permit. A permit to carry a handgun is a separate application with its own training, range qualification and endorser requirements.
- Covers purchase and possession of rifles and shotguns, plus ammunition purchases.
- Required before a licensed dealer will transfer a long gun to you.
- Handgun purchases need a separate permit to purchase a handgun for each handgun.
- Carrying a handgun requires a permit to carry — a different application entirely.
How to apply for an FID card
- Step 1
Review the built-in safety course
Since September 2022, the required firearms safety instruction is built into the FARS application itself. First-time applicants review the state's Firearms Safety & Awareness presentation while applying online — there is no separate course or certificate to obtain or attach.
- Step 2
Apply through FARS
Applications go through the New Jersey State Police Firearms Application and Registration System. You select the police department covering your residence, or the State Police station if there is no local department.
- Step 3
List two references and sign the consents
You provide two reputable references and a mental health records consent. Incomplete or inaccurate answers are the most common reason an application stalls.
- Step 4
Get electronically fingerprinted
New applicants are scheduled with the state's fingerprinting vendor for the state and FBI background check. Bring photo ID and your FARS reference number.
- Step 5
Wait out the background investigation
The issuing agency investigates and contacts your references. Statutory guidance points to about 30 days; real-world timelines vary by town, so follow up politely with the records officer.
- Step 6
Download the PDF the state sends you
New-style FID cards are issued electronically. The state emails a secure link to a PDF credential. Download it and save the original file — it is your credential, and it is the file you upload to us for printing.
Carrying an electronic FID card day to day
Because the new-style card arrives as a PDF, most holders end up carrying a folded printout, a photo on a phone, or nothing at all. A phone screen dies; paper goes through the wash.
The state document stays the official record. If you want a durable everyday carry card, use the dedicated FID card printing page once you have the original file. These cards faithfully reproduce your valid, state-issued credential for everyday reference and carry. Based on our review of the applicable requirements in consultation with the issuing agency and several New Jersey firearms attorneys, we are confident these cards serve as an appropriate way to demonstrate your credential to law enforcement.
- Save the original state-issued PDF, not a screenshot.
- Keep the official document where you can access it if asked.
- Update or replace the state credential through your issuing agency before ordering a new printed copy.
Common questions
Does a New Jersey firearms ID card expire?
Older FID cards were issued without an expiration date. New Jersey moved to a renewable electronic credential, so check the expiration printed on your own document and calendar the renewal with your issuing agency before it lapses.
Can I laminate my NJ firearms ID card?
Laminating an original card can be treated as altering it, and it makes the card harder to verify. That is exactly why people have a durable copy printed instead: keep the original document intact and carry the printed card for daily reference.
How do I change the address on my NJ firearms ID card?
New Jersey requires you to notify the issuing authority of a change of address in writing, generally within 30 days of moving; if you moved to a different municipality, the notice goes to the new town's chief of police as well. Once you receive the updated document, upload it and we will reprint your card.
How do I replace a lost NJ FID card?
Request a replacement from the agency that issued it — that is the only source for a valid credential. If you have the electronic PDF, you can also have a fresh reference card printed here the same week.
How do I download my firearms ID card PDF in NJ?
After approval, the State Police send an automated email with a secure download link. Check spam and junk folders. Download the original PDF file itself — not a screenshot of it — and save it somewhere safe.
How long does it take to get an FID card in NJ?
The statute points to roughly 30 days, but the practical range is one to several months depending on your department's backlog, fingerprint appointment availability, and how quickly your references respond.
Do I need an FID card in New Jersey?
If you are a New Jersey resident buying or receiving a rifle or shotgun, or buying ammunition for one, yes. Confirm your specific situation with your local police department or the New Jersey State Police.
