The NJ SORA card, explained
SORA registration is what makes you employable as a security officer in New Jersey. Here is how the registration works, when it renews, and how to carry it without destroying a paper copy every month.
What a SORA card is
SORA is New Jersey's Security Officer Registration Act. Anyone working as a security officer for a licensed security company in New Jersey must be SORA registered, and the registration is administered by the New Jersey State Police.
Your SORA registration is the credential employers and clients ask to see on site — which means it lives in your pocket every shift.
- Required for security officers employed by NJ-licensed security firms.
- Involves a state-approved SORA training course and a background check.
- Registration is renewed on a set cycle — check the expiration on your own document.
- Issued as a document you keep and present at work.
How to get your SORA registration
- Step 1
Complete state-approved SORA training
Take the required hours of classroom instruction from an approved SORA instructor covering the officer's role, legal limits, ethics, emergency response and report writing.
- Step 2
Submit the application and fingerprints
Your application goes through the New Jersey State Police with electronic fingerprinting for a criminal history background check.
- Step 3
Get hired or sponsored by a licensed firm
SORA registration is tied to employment with a licensed security business. Many officers complete training first and register once hired.
- Step 4
Keep and carry your registration
Once issued, keep the original document safe and carry a durable reference card on shift instead of a folded printout.
A SORA card that survives the job
Security work is outdoor work: rain, cold, long shifts, uniform pockets. Paper does not last, and no supervisor wants to squint at a cracked phone screen.
A printed wallet card keeps the registration readable on shift while the original document stays protected. Many officers order two: one for the wallet and one for the uniform.
Common questions
Do I need a SORA card to work security in New Jersey?
Security officers employed by New Jersey licensed security companies must be SORA registered. Confirm your specific role with your employer and the New Jersey State Police.
How long does SORA training take?
State-approved SORA training is a fixed classroom program, usually completed over a day or two, followed by application processing and fingerprinting. Ask your training provider for current hours and scheduling.
Does a SORA registration expire?
Yes, SORA registration runs on a renewal cycle. Check the dates on your own document and start the renewal before it lapses so you do not miss shifts.
Can you print my SORA card?
Yes. Upload the state-issued PDF or a scan of the physical registration and we print a durable wallet card of that document. These cards faithfully reproduce your valid, state-issued credential for everyday reference and carry. Based on our review of the applicable requirements in consultation with the issuing agency and several New Jersey firearms attorneys, we are confident these cards serve as an appropriate way to demonstrate your credential to law enforcement.
